Before first light, under the sea-grape

The moon is still up when you meet Jaime behind the old casino, where a small hand-painted sign points into the trees: Mount Royal Hike. Red earth underfoot, leaves black against the brightening sky. Water packed, walking sticks ready — from here, there's only one direction: up.

Mount Royal Summit

877 ft summit~2 hrs guidedModerate–challenging

The highest point on Canouan. A steep single-track through thick dry-tropical forest — some sections climb at nearly 45 degrees — opening onto a boulder-top panorama of Mayreau, Union Island, Palm Island and Petit St. Vincent. On a clear day, you'll see all the way to Grenada. Tortoises, hummingbirds and tree-climbing hermit crabs keep you company on the way up.

Mantet Trail

North side~90 mins guidedEasy–moderate

Canouan's second hill, on the island's quieter northern side. A gentler walk through cactus scrub and wind-shaped forest, past lichen-painted volcanic boulders, to headland views over reefs and the turquoise shallows. The trail Jaime recommends for sunrise, birdwatching, and anyone easing into island hiking.

02Into the forest

The dry forest closes in around you

Within minutes the island disappears and you're inside it — a tunnel of wind-bent trees, bromeliads and pale trunks. Jaime reads this forest like a book: which bark heals, which fruit the tortoises fight over, where the hummingbirds nest. Listen for rustling — hermit crabs climb the trees here.

03The climb

Sea-grape thickets, and the first flash of blue

The trail steepens — in places close to 45 degrees — and the forest thins to sea-grape and cactus scrub. Then it happens: a gap in the leaves, and the Caribbean appears below you, impossibly wide. Jaime sets the pace; you catch your breath and your first photos.

04The ridge opens

Walking the spine of the island

Above the treeline the whole north coast unrolls — headlands folding into the sea, surf tracing white lines around the reefs, the trade wind steady on your face. This is Jaime's favourite stretch: the hard part is behind you, and the island belongs to you alone.

Meet Jaime Simmons

Born and raised on Canouan, Jaime knows these two hills the way most people know their own backyard — because they are his backyard. He has walked Mount Royal and Mantet in every season and every light: sunrise scrambles before the heat, golden-hour summits, and slow morning walks spotting hummingbirds and tortoises with kids in tow.

“I'll walk you up the same trails I've hiked since I was a boy — and show you the island the way only a Canouan man can.”

Every hike is private to your group and paced to you. Jaime handles the route, the water, and the stories — the island history, the plants and their uses, and exactly where to stand for the photo you'll be showing people for years.

The Grenadines, laid out at your feet

The last scramble tops out on lichen-painted boulders — the highest point on Canouan. South: Mayreau, Union, Palm Island, Petit St. Vincent, and on a clear day, Grenada. Below: coves, lagoons and the pond glinting behind the beach. Jaime hands you water and lets the view do the talking.

History & nature

The Island of Turtles

Canouan sits in the heart of the Grenadines, a crescent of green hills wrapped in one of the Caribbean's great barrier reefs. First settled thousands of years ago by peoples from South America and later home to the Kalinago, the island has been fought over by empires, gifted by a king, rebuilt after a hurricane — and through it all, the tortoises have kept walking its hills.

Its trails pass through dry-tropical forest unlike anywhere else in the archipelago: wind-sculpted trees, towering cacti, orchids and bromeliads clinging to volcanic boulders painted white with lichen. Hummingbirds flicker through the canopy and hermit crabs climb the trees. Every hike with HikesRus is part nature walk, part history lesson, told by someone who grew up inside the story.

Island of turtlesThe name Canouan comes from the Kalinago word for turtle — and you'll still meet tortoises on the trails today.
